An end-of-season promo for Manchester City and Nexen Tire, and a portable foot-golf course built out of oversized, mini-golf-inspired obstacles. Still the best brief I've had.
In May 2019 I worked on an end-of-season promotional video for Manchester City and Nexen Tire. As a devoted football fan, being asked to design a foot-golf course for a Premier League club was a proper pinch-yourself moment. The brief was a portable course made from oversized, mini-golf-style obstacles, with tyres worked into the theming throughout, so Nexen's product was part of playing the course rather than a sticker on the side of it.
The finished course was installed in an indoor training facility and played by Manchester City players as part of the campaign, with the tyre motif appearing across ramps, targets, and hole surrounds.
The course went into City's indoor training facility and got played by the first team for the video. Every obstacle had to be light enough to carry in and solid enough to take a proper strike from someone who does it for a living. It also had to look right on camera, which quietly ruled out a lot of otherwise sensible construction.
The tyre motif runs through the whole set. Tyres became tee pads, hole surrounds, and the arch you had to shoot through, so the sponsor was part of playing the course instead of a logo bolted onto the side of it.
