Minimalist, geometric event graphics designed while running Nottingham Trent University's largest music society.
In my second year at Nottingham Trent I put myself forward for president of Trent Bass Music Society, having spent my first year as a fairly enthusiastic member. Trent Bass was one of the biggest societies on campus at the time, in a Students' Union the NUS had just named the best in the country.
Running it meant networking, keeping a big and fairly rowdy community happy, and putting on events, with the visual identity to keep fresh on top of all that. I designed every flyer myself, using minimal geometric shapes and lines and borrowing from music media and art references, hoping to pull in a broader and more creative crowd than the usual student night poster manages.
The role also opened the door to collaborations with Stealth, Rough Trade, Red Bull, Detonate, Dollop, and Smirnoff, among others. Each one needed artwork that could hold its own next to a brand with an actual design team behind it.
Every flyer worked from the same small kit: a hard grid, flat blocks of colour, and one piece of geometry doing most of the work. It meant a run of nights read as one series even when the guest brand changed completely, and it meant I could turn one out in an evening between lectures.
